Rome fest to fete Richard Gere

ROME -- Richard Gere will be honored by the Rome Film Festival, which has also recruited Michael Mann for an onstage conversation, and secured sneak-peek footage of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part I."Gere, who will receive the fest's Marcus Aurelius lifetime achievement award, will hold a public chat about the early stages of his career, following a screening of a restored copy of Terrence Malick's 1978 "Days of Heaven," the pic in which the thesp played his first starring role.Previous recipients of the Rome nod include Sean Connery, Al Pacino and Meryl Streep.New announced pics set to unspool at the Eternal City Extravaganza are Curtis Hanson's HBO financial thriller telepic "Too Big to Fail," out-of-competition, and James Marsh's docu "Project Nim," in the Extra section. A high-profile "Twilight" event is being prepared by the fest's Alice in the City kiddie section ahead of the November 16 day-and-date release "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part I." Belgian helmer Vincent Lannoo's "Vampires" followup, "Little Glory" will also unspool in this section.As previously announced, Luc Besson's Aung San Suu Kyi biopic "The Lady" will open the fest on Oct. 27, with the Gallic helmer and stars Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis in tow.The sixth edition of the Rome fest will run Oct. 27-Nov. 4.
